But Andersen’s film fails on several accounts, and cranks the food fear sirens to irresponsibly high levels. He mischaracterizes and overstates what we know about how particular foods drive disease, by offering a narrow view of the science with cherry–picked studies to support his views. He also seeks out a slew
of vegan and animal rights–friendly health professionals rather than a more balanced roster of experts, and engages in silly gotcha journalism to suggest organizations like the American Diabetes Association intentionally the truth about diet.
What the Health cherry–picks and misreports studies to make the case for veganism
What the Health is part of a genre of food documentaries (and diet books) that selectively analyze nutrition research to demonize particular foods and praise a particular diet. In this case, Andersen cherry-picks studies about nutrition and often exaggerates their findings or reports them out of context, to drive home his case for veganism. Let’s run through a few examples:
Eating processed meats is as bad for you as smoking. In a gross distortion of the World Health Organization’s 2015 review of the link between processed meat and cancer, Andersen claims WHO sees bacon as a food on par with cigarettes and asbestos when it comes to causing cancer, and that eating a daily serving of the stuff increases your colorectal cancer risk by 18 percent
.A person’s lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is about 5 percent, and eating processed meat every day appears to boost a person’s absolute risk of cancer by 1 percentage point, to 6 percent (that’s 18 percent of the 5 percent lifetime risk). So enjoying the odd strip of bacon or salami sandwich isn’t going to change your lifetime cancer risk, but eating the stuff every single day could increase your risk of this one particular cancer by a single percentage point.
What’s more, the WHO did not say that eating meat was as deadly as smoking. Rather, it determined that the strength of the evidence linking processed meats to colorectal cancer is similar to the strength of the evidence linking tobacco and cancer, meaning there’s convincing data here. This certainly doesn’t mean that eating processed meat is as bad for you as smoking. It means that according to the agency’s assessment, the links between processed meat and certain types of cancer are well–established.
So when the filmmaker asks, “If processed meats are labeled the same as cigarettes, how is it even legal for kids to be eating this way?” he clearly didn’t understand the WHO’s read of the research. (To be fair, a lot of other media outlets got the WHO warning wrong too.)
2) Eating an egg a day is as bad as smoking five cigarettes. This claim that equates eating eggs with one of the most
A sunburn affects the skin in a similar way that a burn from the oven does, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “The skin barrier becomes disrupted and inflamed, and there is injury to skin cells themselves.” So, if you develop a sunburn, you actually want to take care of the skin from the outside in and the inside out, he adds.

For individual red areas, apply 1% hydrocortisone cream to calm inflammation, he suggests. “The quicker you soothe inflammation, the less potential damage the skin will experience.” As for any open wounds or raw skin, treat it the same way you would treat a thermal burn: Apply an over–the–counter antibiotic ointment like bacitracin ($5; amazon) to the individual area—this will form a protective seal and prevent it from getting infected, says Dr. Zeichner. But if you develop a blister, make sure to leave the roof intact because it protects the underlying raw skin from the environment and acts like a natural bandage, he adds.
I’ll admit: Until recently, I’d never heard of cytomegalovirus, or CMV as it’s often referred to. It was never mentioned during prenatal appointments with my first child. And with my second child, who came to me through the generosity of surrogacy, I thought we went over every potential test and complication with the fertility specialist. But again, no one mentioned CMV.
Prevention and awareness remain the best defense against CMV in pregnancy. CMV spreads through contact with bodily fluids, such as saliva, urine, or mucus, from a person with an active CMV infection. To reduce your risk for CMV, regularly wash your hands with soap, especially after changing diapers or before eating. Aim to wash your hands for 15 to 20 seconds. You should also avoid sharing eating utensils, drinking glasses, straws, or toothbrushes.
CMV is a highly contagious virus that’s spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, and urine. The virus is rarely spread through blood and organ donations, due to modern preventive and treatmentmeasures. It may be CMV is a common virus that’s related to the same viruses that lead to mononucleosis and chickenpox. Most people will encounter CMV during their lifetimes, but the majority will experience mild symptoms only. However, CMV can cause more severe infections if you have a weakened immune system or if you’ve recently had an organ transplant.Additionally, newborn babies who contract CMV from their mothers during pregnancy or through nursing may also be at risk of developmental issues It’s estimated that about 1 percent of babies in the United States contract CMV before birth. This is also called congenital CMVTrusted Source.Once you have CMV, it stays in your body for the rest of your life. It may go through cycles of dormancy, where you may experience periodic active infections. In most cases, you don’t need any treatment unless you have a weak immune system and require antiviral medications.

In the wake of three high–profile mass shootings in less than a month, lawmakers on Capitol Hill have renewed negotiations over legislation that could stem gun violence. But even those who are trying to reach an agreement on the long–divisive issue acknowledge that finding consensus remains an enormous task.Meanwhile, Congress is running out of time to decide whether to extend the current additional subsidies for people buying their own health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. States and insurers are now setting rates for 2023; in the absence of congressional action, those much–higher premiums would become public right before the midterm elections.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who at the end of last year walked away from negotiations on President Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” legislation, signaled last week that curbing drug price increases, a part of that package, remains a key concern of his. That may also signal that negotiations on a more limited legislative package may be moving forward.
Democrats are also under pressure to move quickly if they want to extend the premium subsidies for plans purchased on the ACA insurance marketplaces. Those largerare subsidies set to expire at the end of the year, but state regulators are already working to set prices for the 2023 plans and some of those calculations depend on estimates of how many people will enroll.

In reaction to a leaked draft opinion suggesting that the Supreme Court is preparing to oveturn the constitutional protections for abortion in its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, some local prosecutors have announced they would not bring criminal cases against health care professionals providing abortions. But that is unlikely to be of much help to local clinics or doctors, who are expected to stop providing such care if they could face criminal charges. t requests from drugmakers to authorize vaccines.
